BPM is best served with the support of a Centre of Excellence (CoE). It is a dedicated team or department that brings together expertise and resources to continuously improve processes, tools, and practices within the organization.
The CoE ensures that best practices in BPM are followed, standards are maintained, and innovation is stimulated. It focuses on centralizing knowledge and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
Initially, a CoE may be very small and later expand with the necessary roles to enable BPM to flourish within an organization. Depending on the chosen setup, a CoE will either take on a more facilitative or a directive role.
3 misconceptions on the Role of CoE:
❌ The CoE is JUST a project organization with project managers for process improvements.
✅ The CoE ecompasses a variety of roles to ensure best practices, provide governance and support continuous improvement.
❌ The CoE is THE project organization of a company.
✅ There might be other programs running in the organization to manage a Transition or Prince II project. The CoE will be a (small or large) stakeholder of these programs but not in the lead role.
❌ ALL process Improvements are carried out by the CoE.
✅ Improvement projects are not solely the domain of the CoE. In a self-learning organization, local process owners and engineers can independintly lead improvement projects, with support from the CoE as needed.
Position of the CoE:
A CoE is ideally positioned at a central and corporate level, but initiatives can start in a specific Business Unit.
